Review
“Altogether absorbing. . . . Mr. Baatz, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan, has done meticulous research, and he writes extremely well. . . . His book on the Leopold and Loeb case is the best we’ll have for a long, long time.” (New York Times)“The story of the Jazz Age thrill-killers Leopold and Loeb has never been told in so gripping a style. A significant work of historical scholarship that reads like a page-turning thriller, Simon Baatz’s masterly book now stands as the definitive account of this legendary case.” (Harold Schechter, author of The Devil's Gentleman)“Baatz lucidly lays out the complicated courtroom maneuvers and also provides a fascinating, skillful analysis of two different legal philosophies…. A solid true-crime thriller that’s also a masterly analysis of postwar shifts in society’s ideas about crime and personality.” (Kirkus Reviews)Exhaustively researched and rivetingly presented. . . . One of the best true-crime books of this or any other season. (Booklist (starred review))“[Baatz] breaks his fascinating narrative into two distinct Law and Order–type sections. . . . While it might be easy to dismiss the murderers—Nathan “Babe” Leopold Jr. and Richard “Dickie” Loeb—as bored rich kids, Baatz shows that there was much more to this story.” (Library Journal)“The pages read like the very best crime fiction. . . . Reading Baatz’s compelling, definitive book brings it all back to life.” (Open Letters Monthly)“Simon Baatz’s For the Thrill of It is likely to be the definitive work on this infamous crime and the dramatic trial of its perpetrators. It is impressive in its research, even-handed in its tone and immensely readable. . . . [An] excellent book.” (Wall Street Journal)“This story never fails to astonish.” (Chicago Tribune)Meticulous and thorough, and it puts the case in historical perspective as a clash between two conflicting views of criminals and crime, one espoused by...Clarence Darrow...the most famous American lawyer of his day, perhaps indeed of any day. (Washington Post Book World)“A riveting non-fiction thriller that will turn you into an activity-hostile recluse who shouts, “Go away and let me read!”… What makes Thrill of It so exceptional is the way Baatz balances all the elements: the killers, the crime, the police, the media and the trial’s impact.” (USA Today)

I have read a few accounts of the Leopold and Loeb case over the years, but from this book I learned many, many details I did not know about their lives before the murder, the murder and the trial. Well written and obviously well researched, I recommend this book for all those interested in the facts, as opposed to the myths, of one of the 20th Century's most infamous crimes and its perpetrators.
Interesting book, very curious circumstances that wouldn't be surprising if it happened today. On the other hand, it is quite disturbing. These young people of privilege don't think like "regular" people and find strange ways to amuse themselves.
Such a sadness for the victims family. Such unnecessary evil for 2 feeling superior, arrogant, rich kids wanting a thrill, and thumbing their noses at society. They should have had the death penalty. One justly murdered in prison w the second released, married and lived a content life in Puerto Rico. That is not justice. The death penalty is biblically supported. An eye for an eye. Evil is to be removed from society so it does not grow through influence. It shows how anesthetized sociopaths are to the pain of others. I grieved for the heartbreak of the boys parents to have had their child so flippantly murdered. This case haunts. The book is good the story and case so sad.
I did a lot of skimming.way too much info for me and very dry at times. Not my first book on the subject.Fascinating story of two wealthy kids from good families, with everything going for them.So hard to understand how they could be so ruthless. This book goes into great detail about almost everyone involved especially the lawyers.Way too much detail for me.
Pretty interesting, but author slips in chapters that are NOT about Leopold & Loeb. I found those interesting, too, but felt like I was being held captive. Like : "If you want to know the ending, you have to read this first." Due to that, I will not read another book by Baatz.
This is a good account, but if you're really interested in the Leopold and Loeb story and I can only recommend one book, it would be "The Crime of the Century" by Hal Higdon.
I guess my biggest complaint would be that while this was the tale of Leopold and Loeb, I felt that this book was about 33% about Leopold and Loeb and more about the Chicago political machinations of the time. As so often was true in the courtroom, this book seemed not to fare well in Clarence Darrow's shadow.
I’ve always found this story interesting. Hitchcock’s movie Rope triggered my interest but I’m glad I have read Compulsion yet because this is a great detailed true account of what happened. One thing for sure, crime is Chicago is NOT new.
