I purchased this book to give to our 8 year-old grandson about 2 months before our trip which will be his first time to Disney World. I'm already fairly familiar with WDW having been there 5 times within the last 5 years, but this book is still very helpful because it gives a kid an opportunity to look through and choose some of the attractions they are especially interested in checking out. It helps build excitement for the trip. The plentiful pictures in the book helped me to become familiar with the names of the rides that are geared for kids his age that my husband and I skip over when we go ourselves. With that knowledge I also know how to find these attractions in the theme parks. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because some of the pictures captured his attention so quickly that he made decisions on wanting to experience them without having a better idea of what to expect. Please wish us good luck on "Mission Space". At least I know to only attempt the Green Team version!
This guide is my favorite of all the books we bought for our previous Disney trips. It is so thorough and honest. I felt that most of the opinions and reviews were in line with our own based on our experiences at Disney. The info on dining is so helpful. We had the 2011 version and hoped for new reader comments in the 2012 edition but most of them are repeats. This one does have updated information on newly renovated rooms and rides. A must-have if you want to save time, money, and sanity on your Disney vacation.
We bought this for our 7 years old niece and she loved it. It was great in that it helped her get more involved on the trip ahead of it, and it was always with her in the parks, to get autographs and read, as well as she cherishes it now after the trip.Since the trip involved flying, I also want to point out the following book to help with the travelling experience and make it more fun Going on a Plane Sticker Book (Usborne First Experiences). This was also very helpful in making the overall experience better.
We just returned from our first trip to Disney and I have to say this book was worth every penny plus. I'm not really a Disney person, but our family (husband, wife, 5 year old, 3 year old) had a fantastic time. A big reason for that was the detailed information in this book that was written in a well constructed, easy to follow manner. I would highly recommend if you are new to the park and have small kids since it made a world of difference, in particular in lowering our stress and increasing our fun time.My only one piece of advise not called out clearly in the book... if you have little ones, stay close to the Magic Kingdom. We stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and while nice (the animals are very cool), it is a 1/2 hour bus ride to Magic Kingdom where you will probably spend more of your time. That is particularly true if you do like the book suggests and get there at open, leave after lunch, and return in the early evening. That is 2 hours of bus travel. I liked the Lodge, just not worth the travel with little ones.Overall though the book was a fantastic addition to our trip.
We order these books each year we are planning to go to WDW. They are an indispensable wealth of information that will help anyone with planning a vacation there. Whether you stay for a weekend or a few weeks, these books will keep you in the loop with everything from park schedules, character locations, and prices to how to get the most for your money (we're all broke these days) while trying to feed a family of four and still enjoy the Disney experience without freaking out.We get the kid's guide so that my daughter and son have something to keep them pumped on the way down, and then they give us an idea of what they'd like to do there before they walk through the front gate and get that deer in the headlights look. Haha though it is funny, with so much to do, it can be overwhelming if you don't have a game plan.My wife and I get the regular guide to pre-plan all the major stuff so when we get there we're pretty much set and can actually enjoy the trip rather than try to figure out how we're gonna fit all the major attractions in (no matter how you try, you won't be able to do everything in one trip).
If you've never been to WDW or have no other reference books that cover dining, this is a good book. If you want a thin book to take along with you to the parks to make quick, last-minute decisions, this is a good book as well.I wouldn't use this for critical or popular reviews of restaurants at WDW. The focus is primarily on describing the type of food and service -- there isn't even a "star" rating on restaurants. If you're a Disney vet or have a Passporter, this is superfluous.
We took our six and eight year old granddaughters to Disney World and Sea World for a week by ourselves at the end of June. This book was a really terrific help in planning our days ahead of time. I was able to write out itineraries, which we were able to use as guidelines for our days. Of course, we deviated from the plans here and there. But the info in the book gave us a lot of pre-Disney knowledge, which was very helpful. Because of the info in the book, we decided to go very early in the day and return to our off-property resort in mid-afternoon, when the girls started to droop. We did not eat at Disney nor Sea World, but wore waist packs with snacks, sandwiches & bottles of water at the ready. There is a wealth of information in this book for all types of families. It is especially nice to have the rides/activities rated by different age groups. Big help in the decision-making. Also included are suggestions for what to bring with you -- like inexpensive rain ponchos, etc. (I bought mine at Walmart.)
