I thought Tana French's "In the woods" was a terrific thriller: exciting plot, sophisticated and interesting characters and (contrary to some of the other reviewers below) a very good ending - yes, a very good one. This may be the best thriller I've read since Denise Mina's great "Deception." High praise for me.As you've read in the other reviews, the plot centers around the murder of a young teenage girl in an exurb of Dublin. The protagonist is a male murder squad detective who grew up in the subdivision where this murder took place and has an unusually close (but platonic) relationship with his female partner. The protagonist has shut out an awful episode from his past, which took place in the exact location where the murdered girl is found.French is an astoundingly accomplished first-time novelist. The writing and plotting isn't just assured; it's very effective and never puts a foot wrong. One empathizes with the characters, the procedural information is included in detail but doesn't overwhelm the personality dynamics, and the resolution of the plot is surprising and subtle. I'll be sure to read French's next effort.Great stuff. Just go ahead and get it.

The main character is completely unlikeable and the ending is utterly unsatisfactory. Please do not spend money on this book.

Just finished this book today. I give it four stars because it was very well written and rivetingly intense. I could hardly put it down. However, I have to say that I have seldom been more disappointed by a book ending. There was not much of lessons learned, take away value or redemption here...let alone any happily-ever-after. SPOILERS AHEAD: The Murder Squad gets their man but loses the psychopath girlfriend who instigated the whole thing because of a technicality that professionals should certainly not have missed. I found it puzzling that the main character would excuse his lack of suspicion of the psycho girl with an aside to the reader to the effect that "she tricked you too." That was so not true! The partnering detectives "break up" in a very silly way and go their separate ways, with one so far demoted that I wondered why he stayed on. AND the opening hook with the disappearance of the children 20 years before is NEVER resolved and remains as much a mystery at the end of the book as at the beginning! All in all, this was an excellent read, but I am not sure if I will read more by this author as I prefer stories with a more positive finale.

The book starts off detailing a bizarre unsolved tragedy involving 3 kids. To disappear without a trace in the last one is phoned with his fingers dug into a tree. Many years later that loan survivor becomes a detective and find some self involved in a murder case of a young girl from his hometown. The author tries to get us excited that there is some connection to the mysterious disappearance years before. The book moves slowly with out any real excitement or suspense.Soon the detectives have some possible suspects. The family of the victim is involved of course.SPOILER ALERTby the end of the book we do find out who killed the modern girl but never find out anything more about the original mystery. There is no connection. To make this book even less of a thriller, the prime antagonist is obvious, and the author seems to think we will be shocked...Maybe some people were surprised... I have read a lot of suspense and thriller novels and don't see right through it as easily as I did in this one... If you would like mystery, suspense or thrills look elsewhere. This book has none of that.

I gave up on the book on page 33. This is the most overwritten book that I have tried to read in years. The writing is so burdened with allusions and other literary devices that I actually struggled to follow the story.

One of the best written books ever. French absolutely transports the reader to the scene through her poetic prose. All one has to do is read the Prologue to see it: "Picture a summer stolen whole from some coming-of-age film set in small-town 1950's." When I read that first line, I could visualize the summer day that French goes on to describe further as to its sky, which is "summer full-throated and extravagant in a hot pure silkscreen blue." It is a child's summer she is asking us to remember. a "summer [that] explodes on your tongue tasting of chewed blades of long grass."This is an extraordinarily book! And when a shadow darkens that perfect summer, we can feel it. And Rob, one of the main characters, will always remember the golden parts of that day, but not when his two best friends disappeared, when he was left with a sneaker full of blood with no memory at all of what happened when the dark shadow of evil blotted out the sun. To adulthood, Rob will never recall the details and his friends are never found, never heard of, after that day. Those woods in summer - Adult Rob (with partner Cassie) is now investigating a child's death in the same area. Of course, his tragedy in youth haunts those woods and Rob's mind. Is it possible there is a link between the two crimes? The author's language is exquisite, so wonderfully readable, perfect. I have read this book several times. My favorite scene: At one point, Rob tries to re-live his earlier experience in the woods by staying at the site, alone, and overnight. It is frightening, incredibly done, and so very real.Another reviewer says that this book "is much more than a detective story. It is a great novel!" I agree. After this, I went on to read The Likeness and Faithful Place. Both were excellent. But still, like Rob, I'm haunted by the visions that are In The Woods. A remarkable book and one of my favorites.

Kept assuming there would be a solution to mystery B. Mystery A was obvious. And not to give a solution to the main mystery is truly a betrayal of readers. Im so sorry I wasted money on book 2 thinking that it just might hold the answer. Anyone can drum up mysterious questions . Cheap. Honourable writers give answers. Dont waste your money. Sorry there are no negative stars.
