Update: Week three, and everything is growing well! This is the first time I've ever managed to actually grow something without over or under watering it. See the third picture to see how everything is growing, in sunny, cold, 10% humidity El Paso!I admit it, in some things I'm lazy. That usually includes yard work. However, my wife and I recently purchased ten acres and built a home. My wife and I want to grow some of our own vegetables. It helps save on the wallet and (judging by what some friends have brought into work) home grown vegetables can taste a lot better than what you buy in the store. So I was looking for a way to (1) grow some of our own vegetables, (2) in a way that wouldn't take *too* much of my time, and (3) would be friendly with my well. Oh, and it had to be simple enough for a newbie that hasn't ever grown stuff before. And not too expensive (LOL). This book is excellent on all counts. It's easy to read and understand, and it just makes sense. And the process described is very inexpensive! I'm currently mobilized and just wanted to try it out, so I bought a big pot at Walmart and a smaller one to put inside it. Bought some potting soil and some seed, and voila! You can see from the picture that the small pot is keeping the soil moist next to it. It's only been one day, so we'll see how it goes. But what's really cool is that the process is so simple that I was able to describe it to my wife over the phone and now she's trying it at home as well. It doesn't get any better than that.If you're interested in gardening, pick up this book. You won't regret it.
I enjoyed this book and have several ideas thanks to it, but it feels more like an overview than an indepth resource. Sometimes there will be a mention such as you can take up deep pipes after 1-2 years. When and why should I do this? Little asides like that were almost more frustrating than not because I know there has to be a reason, but I don't have enough information to make a judgement call. Also, it was geared heavily towards very dry climates. Obviously vital information for those areas, but it would have been nice to see it contrasted with how these systems work in areas with more rain.Overall it was a quick and easy read with good information and illustrations. I would have preferred each of the systems have perhaps the regular chapter that was in there as introduction/overview, followed by a chapter that goes more indepth into each system for people planning on implementing the system in question. I'm going to try out some of these methods, but I wish there would be a little less trial and error involved in the long run. I would say it's worth the read, but don't expect an indepth how to.
This is comprehensive discussion of many methods that can be used to water plants efficiently. It seems that most hardware stores promote the tube and emitter systems and yet I see so many fail. I'm glad to see this review as I am planting a garden in an area with only winter rain. After three years of drought and having let my lawn go dry last summer, I want a better method than sprinklers or hand watering.
Presents less conventional watering methods that are very useful. Great explanations and suggestions to implement your own water conservation techniques. My only complaint would be that the book didn't go far enough on some sections, and too far on others. Overall, if you are thinking of making your yard / garden / farm more water friendly, this would be a great place to start.
I'm so glad I purchased "Gardening with less water". Written concisely with clarity and diagrams. I would suggest that anyone who wants to grow plants in any kind of even mildly arid climate or if you care about conserving water along with efficiently and properly supplying water per your plants needs should buy this book before they put one plant in the ground.
Gardening with Less Water - review. This is the best book I have ever read on water conservation in simple terms and easy to follow instructions.
The price of water has caused so many of us to go to zero water landscaping. But that doesn't work with even a small kitchen garden. I plan to put this plan into practice this spring and still have fresh vegetables for my table. I'm looking forward to the adventure.
Knowledgeable and well researched - as always, the ideas from antiquity bear a re-look and the author has done a great job of explaining and adapting; an important book for the H20 conscious gardener.
