About the Author
Fred S. Kleiner, Ph.D. has been Professor of Art History and Archeology at Boston University for four decades. He taught previously at University of Virginia and served as Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Acclaimed for inspiring lectures, Dr. Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities and the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London as well as the Text and Academic Authors Association. In addition to this title, Dr. Kleiner authored several editions of ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY (Cengage), A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART (Cengage), and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture. Dr. Kleiner earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University.

I needed this as a rental for an art history course. They sure do cram an awful lot of info, including many many pictures, into this book, which probably weighs 10 pounds. If you want to know everything you could possibly want to know about art history, get it and settle in for a very long read!
Bought this book for art class. The class required that we read the book. The book is easy to follow. It's only in paper back which isn't as good as hardback. Especially in the backpack. But, it's written well.
It's a textbook. I ordered this for a required art class and so far it's been doing pretty well. I read ahead and it has most of what my professor lectures about so I am "good to go" for class. I don't think it's an mouth watering, "I have to read this" textbook, but it is interesting and I suggest getting it for your class. There are some topics and sections in here that make you curious about what life was like for people of the era, what the purpose was, who the artist was and what was their fate?
I love reading ahead for next classes, and this one was great.
Always the go to book art textbook. Finally a version that acknowledges the Art Nouveau movement- BUT ONLY UNDER ARCHITECTURE. Such a bigger movement and also skims over other art movements that were important as well.
In my classes you didn't really need the book but I did read a couple of chapter straight through. Pretty easy to understand and has good info. I suggest the online version.
I had to buy this book for my art history class. I enjoyed the book it was not boring like your usual textbooks. Pictures were wonderful.
This is a great textbook for anyone taking an art history course. It's very thorough in its descriptions of famous works and provides great historical context. The book also has an extensive glossary of artists and terms in the back making it the perfect choice, even for non-majors.The seller said there were no marks or scratches anywhere in or on the book and I'm happy to report that they were absolutely right. The book arrived in perfect condition and it now accompanies me to Starbucks at least once a week.
