Review
'Until Hanson's "Bluffer's Guide to Etiquette" landed in our house (note: not our 'home') Coco our mongrel was widely acknowledged to have the best manners in the family. But now I no longer HKLP (hold knife like pen) and am buying copies for all my friends' and friends' children for presents. William Hanson's brilliant and essential book is social satnav and a funny and infallible guide to modern life and times.'--Rachel Johnson, former editor of The Lady'If, like me, you have always wanted to be a proper English gentleman, you'll find William Hanson's book the perfect guide for any social situation.'--Gino D'Acampo, chef & TV presenter'Manners say a lot about a person as do dirty shoes, grubby hands and unkempt hair. I believe in today's fast moving world there is, unfortunately, more grubbiness and less manners. But in "The Bluffer's Guide to Etiquette "- which is both factual and funny - we discover how to and how not to behave. How refreshing it is to see people like William telling us all is not lost and there's still hope.'--Dickie Arbiter, former Buckingham Palace Press Spokesman'The first rule of how to behave in polite society should be - do unto others as you want them to do unto you - and if they fail in this regard, then let them choke themselves! I applaud Mr. Hanson on this book.'--The Lord Feldman of Frognal, peer'My '"Let's Do Lunch"' colleague William Hanson has created and written the perfect gift for those interested in polishing up on their manners and learning to behave properly.'--Melanie Sykes, TV presenter'"The Bluffer's Guide to Etiquette" is the most snobbish book I have ever read. Is it wrong to say that I enjoyed every page of it? William Hanson is the 21st century's high priest of snobbery - which I suppose makes it perfect if that is your ambition too!'--Eamon Holmes, broadcaster

The book is interesting and you can learn a few things. Some of it is pretty basic but there are some other points that are very helpful. Throughout he tends to bash Americans and blames us for the dessert knife being put above the dinner plate and the way we say "Nice to meet you." However, we Americans could say that the Brits need all these manners because your food is terrible and you still have antiquated titles and societal classes that most of the world has done away with that require some of these over-the-top pretentious mannerisms. Just sayin'.As I said earlier there are a few things that can be learned but if your American be prepared to be insulted a few times.
This is a fun book to read, and if you have seen any of the author's YouTube videos, you can actually hear his voice as you read (since he writes exactly as he talks!). The book is very tongue in cheek, and although I'm sure his advice is sound, he glosses over an amazing amount of detail, in an effort to maintain his own "high priest of snobbery" image. He knows all the rules (and the reasons behind them) but, I suspect, that rather than taking the time to write a truly comprehensive guide, he would rather you pay the big bucks to take one of his in-person etiquette classes in the UK.This is a slight book (only 120 pages) in a very small format (4.5 by 6.5 inches). If you are looking for a fun, quick and humorous way to get a broad overview of the ways of the British "Upper Class" (the "U"), then this is your book. If, on the other hand, you are seeking an authoritative and detailed guide to etiquette, look elsewhere.
I read this in two sittings, so in all honesty, it is a fairly short work. That being said, the content itself is quite fantastic. Hanson does a fabulous, humorous job showcasing the finer points of English etiquette. Note that I wrote 'English' etiquette. The only mention of the good ol' U.S.A. will be in the form of a cheeky one-liner concerning cultural mannerisms or 'muscle-preferred' selections in sporting events. Some may laugh along...others may harbour a drop or two of resentment. The good news is, since America (not 'The States') is a cultural descendent of Britain, many of Hanson's techniques and recommendations could easily hop across the pond and feel comfortable in use amidst the colonials. So, while you may not have to worry about the proper way to reply to a tea invitation from the Queen, you may find the proper way to set a table or introduce yourself very palpable practices.
Short of preparing to meet Queen of England for Afternoon Tea, some of his pointers seem rather irrelevant to this day and age.Nevertheless, Hanson is a sharp writer and entertaining to read. He has a great sense of humor, and I find myself still reading through the book out of sheer amusement (disclaimer, I've read through half of the book so far). I'm an American, and I appreciate all his cracks about Americans and find there's some truth to his jokes. I also appreciate that there is someone like Hanson in the world who can act as a cultural steward to these historical customs of etiquette.
I have a few books on etiquette and I'll toss them all and keep this. Yes, it comes off as a comedic guide, but it's very informative and contains many formal truths. It focuses on etiquette in England as opposed to etiquette in the United States, but Americans really don't have a sense of "good form" anyway; so where else would an American draw from to learn proper etiquette?
Very specific to British culture, as an American I found many of his issues and topics irrelevant. I love William Hanson's articles in the Daily Mail but this book was a waste of $11. Even though hey are old, Sloan Ranger, Watching the English, The Preppy Handbook and even the text "Class" were more informative and enjoyable. It is also a tiny book with tiny print.
Literally one of the most entertaining books I've ever read! This is a good introduction to etiquette with tongue planted firmly in its cheek, and it tends to give an explanation for the behavior mandated rather than just saying what ought to be done.
I laughed a lot, and learned some interesting facts about the origins of manners and etiquette, why and how it is useful, even if I don’t ever see my self “hanging out†with the British Royal Family. Mr. Hansons book is utterly snobbish, and I enjoyed every page.
