JL's books are always hit or miss for me and this is a big miss. I think this is one of her earliest efforts and it shows, since every trope and ploy gimmick is used. The book should have been renamed "The Trials and Tribulations of an extremely stupid girl". The heroine is a spoiled silly brat, the so-called hero is a shallow serial rapist with no saving grace. The secondary characters are amoral at best or immoral the rest of the time. For example, her devoted nurse tells her to basically suck it up and enjoy it (the rapes), I guess mainly because she is thinking of her own skin. The plot is full of contrivances and improbabilities. An example: heroine does not know how to ride a horse, yet somehow manages to capture a stallion, mount and ride the horse bareback. The heroine is about the stupidest heroine I have come across. At one point she is running away from a bad guy who is trying to kill her straight into another bad guy who blames her for being whipped because he tried to rape her. So, the two bad guys get into a fight and what does the heroine do? Does she run away? Nooo.. she stays to watch the fight and then got caught, yet again. The "hero" has some vendetta he is chasing and is a commitmentphobe. He saw his mother being serially raped and is that what motivated him to rape the heroine repeatedly? As predicted, the heroine develops Stockholm syndrome, tells the "hero" she loves him and will stay with him no matter what (she's already pregnant by then), yet all the "hero" tells her is he wants her for the time being. What self-respect? what's that?JL should have disavowed this book. It's a silly disgusting book.

Some reviewers seem overly concerned with the "rape" issue in this book. Remember that this is taking place in 1667 and most women were forced in one way or another back then. Johanna Lindsey is not anywhere near as explicit as most writers. Romance books are to women what porn videos are to men. If you do not want to read about sex, do not buy a romance novel. You simply cannot force today's standards on historical romance novels. Everyone needs to grow up and enjoy an outstanding book by a great writer who understands that every virgin needs a push every now and then.

I think the book is decent because it is very realistic for attitudes. Tristan is a pirate. He acts like one. You can't expect a pirate to act like a schoolmaster. It wouldn't make any sense. The only thing that I will say about the book that is annoying is that the heroine is particularly childish. She argues, she argues, she argues, she argues. She is screaming down the stairs how much she hates him. She is screaming in his face. She is trying to stab him. It would make sense if there were a few incidences of her responding that way, but she continues to do so no matter how ineffective her approach to the situation is and even though she has no better options. On chapter 23, I nearly threw the book because the childishness of both characters hit the ceiling. Bettina is really immature and her more mature male captor is emotionally abusing her because he is smarter, extremely jealous, and has few scruples. I think it is a good book though because it keeps your interest. It is fairly well written, and, even though the heroine is very immature, you can still identify with her feelings well enough to be able to relate to the circumstances of the book. Obviously, Tristan is badly behaved to keep the reader interested in what he is going to do next to get what he wants. I think people may have trouble with the concept of an abuser who is loyal to his partner, but the book is very realistic. He abuses for a reason, and that is true of abusers. Sexual ethics do not easily apply to the time period because Bettina's original situation is not ethical. Tristan is a hero because he saves Bettina from a relationship he already knows is worse than living with him (because he more mature), but he uses bad methods to accomplish a good goal. He is a pirate.

This is a really Despicable read! This NOT a romance story, it is a creepy story about rape, abduction, terrorizing of a young, selttered, innocent virgin who had no idea about intimacy between a man and a woman. It is a twisted, evil, and perverse story about a sick, evil, and psychotic sociopathic rapist, and a beautiful and innocent girl. The supposed hero is a disgusting rapist who abducted, and brutally raped the virgin heroine. He forced her to give in against her will by threatening to torture and kill supposed prisoners on the ship, by slowly cutting off each of their limbs, and feeding them to the sharks. He continued to rape her throughout the entire book, an held her hostage and would not let her go. Besides the disgusting psychopath of a supposed hero, were those who were supposed to protect the innocent heroine, asked her not to complain, and were perplexed with the heroine when she complained about her circumstances, their questions to her were, why do you hate him so, he has not harmed you. I think that if a woman fights and screams, says no, please don't rape me, and I hate you to her rapist from beginning to end, that she does not want his advances forced upon her. What disgusted me about this story was when the heroine fell madly in love with the evil SOB sadistic rapist. This is a twisted story about sadism, bondage against an innocent girl, and it is extremely disgusting. I have read many books from this author that I loved and enjoyed, but after reading this poor excuse for a love story, I have totally lost all respect for this author.., and can now imagine her in a black leather neglegee, holding a whip, and demanding that her sex partner rape her in order for her to enjoy sex. This is the perfect book that a rapist, or pedophile would read in order to get ideas about how to rape and torture his victims. Please save yourself eight dollars, and Don't waste your money on this despicably disgusting, perverted, and sadistic book, unless you are into rape, sadism, terrorizing bondage, and physical, mental, and emotional torture. I am sorry for any rape victims who have had the misfortune to come across this horrible, and sick book. Johanna Lindsay, you are a sick, twisted, and perverted author. I would NOT recommend this read!!!!!
